Many of our backyard birds are molting giving them a scruffy look. If you spot a bird with feathers that look messed up the bird is most likely in molt. Molting is the way the birds replace their worn out feathers They grow an entirely new set of feathers. Sometimes you will even see gaps in their wings as the flight feathers are replaced.
